Project: The design and delivery of a new Food Retail Store
Client: Tesco Stores Limited
Accommodation: 90,000sqft
Status: On-site
Summary: S+SA Architects were directly appointed by main contractor, Bowmer & Kirkland to develop this 90,000 sqft store with petrol station for Point Estates on land adjacent to Fratton Park - the home of Portsmouth FC. The Tesco store, which opens in Autumn 2015, is built on a raised podium with customer car parking beneath. Customers access the sales floor level utilising travelators and lifts located in a glazed atrium.
The store achieves high BREEAM and energy efficiency ratings. It allows maximum natural daylight via the clerestory glazing and roof lights and incorporates many other environmental features such as SIPS panelling, rainwater harvesting, CHP energy generation and passive ventilation of the sales floor.
Work on site started in December 2014. The initial phase was the formation of a new car park for the football club which then freed the building plot. Careful phasing has meant that access to the football ground from the nearby train station has been maintained throughout the building works which also include a new roundabout on Fratton Way.
