The Commission

S+SA provided architectural design services from inception to completion of the project for a new build extra care development to house frail elderly residents in bespoke accommodation – this commission came under our position as framework consultants for a large residential provider.

Our Input

S+SA were already appointed as architects for 55 new build residential units on a site in Kettlethorpe near Wakefield a portion of which was set aside for the development of the new care home. Careful construction detailing was required to address the sloping site topography and connections between the steel framed central form and the timber framed accommodation forms.

Our Value

The site opportunity was part of a Local Authority Design Competition, which the client wished to enter, aimed at addressing a shortage of fit for purpose care sector accommodation in the area.

S+SA’s successful design entry was based on Scandinavian precedents for both internal space and contemporary appearance and incorporated elements not usually associated with care developments such as a large central multi-function space for group activities and social interaction and private external space for every apartment via balconies or terraces.
