CLARO ROAD CARE HOME,
HARROGATE

Project Overview

Project: The design and delivery of a 20-bed care home for D.A.Y.
Client: Disability Action Yorkshire
Size: 13,091.50 sq ft
Status: Completed

The scheme involved the design of a care home for adults with physical disabilities aged 18-65 for a Harrogate-based charitable organisation on a site formerly occupied by allotments, comprising 20 individual bedded units and 2 training apartments.  The accommodation was split into two distinct 10 bed houses with a communal link providing safe access and egress between units.

The development also incorporated various associated ancillary accommodation, including a duplicated lounge, dining, assisted bathing facilities, staff changing and dining/lounge, managers office, laundry and sluice together with a communal lift and visitors disabled wc.

Initial design objectives focussed on attempting to meet the client’s aspirations to provide modern care home facilities in line with the latest guidance, in a contemporary design solution fit for the Twenty-first Century.  Consequently, the design approach adopted was usually applied to the provision of high quality private sector housing developments, rather than viewing the building as an institutional style facility separate from its surrounding land uses.

The buildings plan form and the contemporary domestic style of the elevational treatment was therefore intended to counter the institutional perception of similar past developments, through the provision of modern and homely accommodation.

Since opening, the scheme has proved hugely successful, maintaining full occupancy levels.  S+SA Ltd are currently working with Disability Action Yorkshire on an exciting second phase to this development.
