CHAIN LANE,
KNARESBOROUGH

Project Overview

Project: The design and delivery of social housing – 10 apartments and 13 dwellings
Client: Yorkshire Housing
Size: 19,476.37sq ft
Status: Completed

One of the commissions resulting from our long-term relationship with YHL, the scheme at Chain Lane Knaresborough comprises 10 self-contained flat units in a single building, with 13 individual adjacent dwellings, providing a mixture of two and three bed accommodation.

Although the scheme layout provides vehicular and pedestrian access from within the site, units arranged along Chain Lane itself were designed with dual frontages. The LA Planning Department were keen for the project to make a positive impact on the larger streetscape hence the rear elevations of these dwellings were treated more formally and private external space was enclosed with open railings. This contributed to the scheme’s less introverted feel in comparison to similar developments.

Disability Action Yorkshire have a long relationship with SSA-Architects which began with the design of our residential home for younger adults with physical disabilities when they impressed us with their commitment to ensuring that the design aided full accessibility and independence.  They have remained firm supporters of and amongst other events run an annual bike ride raising much needed funds to support our work.  They show a genuine interest in our work and in the ongoing needs and aspirations of disabled people.  We consider SSA-Architects to be true and valued friends of the charity.
