Project: The design and delivery of a new Tesco Extra
Client: Tesco
Size: 90,000 sq ft
Status: Completed
S+SA were directly appointed by main contractor, Bowmer & Kirkland to develop this 90,000 sq ft store with petrol station for Point Estates on land adjacent to Fratton Park – the home of Portsmouth FC. The Tesco store, which opened in Autumn 2015, is built on a raised podium with customer car parking beneath. Customers can access the sales floor level utilising travelators and lifts located in a glazed atrium.
The store achieved a high BREAAM and energy efficiency ratings. It allows maximum natural daylight via the clerestory glazing and roof lights and incorporates many other environmental features such as SIPS panelling, rainwater harvesting, CHP energy generation and passive ventilation of the sales floor.
The initial phase was the formation of a new car park for the football club which then freed the building plot. Careful phasing meant that access to the football ground from the nearby train station was maintained throughout the building works which also included a new roundabout on Fratton Way.

Disability Action Yorkshire have a long relationship with SSA-Architects which began with the design of our residential home for younger adults with physical disabilities when they impressed us with their commitment to ensuring that the design aided full accessibility and independence. They have remained firm supporters of and amongst other events run an annual bike ride raising much needed funds to support our work. They show a genuine interest in our work and in the ongoing needs and aspirations of disabled people. We consider SSA-Architects to be true and valued friends of the charity.
