THORNTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Yorkshire Dales

Project Overview

Project: Design of an eco community hub to provide education and community space for the local community.
Client: Yorkshire Housing / Thornton Grammar School
Size: 400 sq m
Status: Concept Design

S+SA developed the brief for this agricultural/educational building by first studying operations at an existing off-site facility, and then synthesising the information into a design solution for the new site within the school grounds.

The building, of approximately 400 sq metres with external covered growing areas, has a vernacular design theme that echoes the form of a traditional Yorkshire Dales Longhouse.

High quality natural materials (dry stone walling, slate and untreated English oak) have been used for visible features, while contemporary insulation measures, such as triple glazed, argon-filled, hermetically sealed units ensure the building is economical to heat.
